Description: Tablet is a bi-lobed (bow-tie-shaped) thick plate of light olive brown sandstone. The obverse face has an abstract bird incised. A cruder representation of the same design appears on the opposite side along with a deep curving groove that follows the curve of one edge and was probably used for sharpening bone tools. Description: The Bicentennial barn-painting program was an inexpensive, grassroots marketing campaign that painted the official logo of the Ohio Bicentennial on a highly visible historic barn in each of Ohio's 88 counties. Over 2,000 farmers and landowners submitted their barn descriptions to the committee for consideration. Beginning in 1998, artist Scott Hagan spent five years painting the logos, tailored to every barn's unique character. Typically, the barn owners hosted a celebration at the completion of their barn painting. This photograph is an exterior view of Barn #49, located at 27754 State Route 93 in Vinton County. Description: The pictured reproduction of a map illustrates charcoal furnaces once located in the Hanging Rock Iron Region of southeastern Ohio and the bordering region of Kentucky. While iron production originated in the northeastern corner of Ohio during the first half of the nineteenth century, southern Ohioans soon dominated the industry. The most productive area was centered near Hanging Rock, along the Ohio River. By 1860, southern Ohioans had established sixty-nine iron furnaces, producing more than 100,000 tons of iron annually, across Gallia, Hocking, Jackson, Lawrence, Scioto, and Vinton Counties. The manufacturers sent much of the iron up and down the Ohio River to Cincinnati and Pittsburgh, allowing southern Ohioans to prosper. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: This photograph shows Lake Alma near Wellston, Ohio. A second photograph shows campers at Lake Alma State Park in the 1960s. The photographs measure 2.75" x 2.75" (6.99 x 6.99 cm). C. K. Davis built Lake Alma in 1903 as an amusement park. The park included a merry-go-round, dance pavilion, and outdoor theater. It closed in 1910 and the city of Wellston purchased the lake for a municipal water supply. Wellston later agreed to lease the land to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources for Lake Alma State Park. Camping, hiking, swimming, and boating became popular attractions. View on Ohio Memory.
